How to Raise a Confident Child

parenting Aug 15, 2023

Greetings to all the super dads out there! Today, we’re going to delve into a quality that’s as crucial as intelligence or good manners in your kiddos’ development — confidence.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that confidence is a key ingredient for success in all areas of life. Confidence serves as the foundation for a successful, happy, and fulfilling life, extending far beyond childhood and adolescence into adulthood.

So, how do you make sure your kid grows up full of self-confidence? Below are the top tips I’ve learned in raising two amazing and confident teens.

Become a Confident Role Model

One of the most effective ways to raise a self-confident child is to model confidence yourself.

You’re your children’s first-ever superhero, their biggest fan, and above all, their most influential role model. Show them what confidence looks like! Regularly demonstrate self-assuredness in your decisions and actions.

Kids learn by example, so if they see you tackling new tasks with optimism and preparation, it sets a good example for them. That doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be perfect. Acknowledge your anxiety, but don’t focus on it. Instead, focus on the positive things you are doing to get ready.

Encourage Exploration and Creativity

Allow your kids to explore the world around them, make their own choices, and harness their creativity. These experiences build confidence by giving them a sense of accomplishment and a sense of control over their lives.

Encouraging your child to explore their interests and creativity can help them develop a sense of identity and build confidence in facing whatever comes their way. So, make sure to give them time, space, and support to try new things. This is the tried and true way to find their passion and discover a possible path for their future!

Celebrate Effort, Not Just Success

One thing I made sure to do was to celebrate and praise effort, not just success. This approach helps children understand that hard work and persistence are more important than just the outcome.

Another thing to remember is that your kids are still just kids. They are in their learning stage! So, the effort they put into what they do and each lesson learned is worthy of celebration.

Praising and celebrating the effort they put into doing things also encourages them to try doing it again even if they fail — or doing it more when they succeed.

Cultivate Resilience

Let’s face it — life is made up of highs and lows. There’s no avoiding it, no matter how much we try. So, one of the best ways to raise confident children is to make sure they can handle everything that life throws at them: both good and bad.

Teaching our kids to bounce back from setbacks cultivates resilience, a key ingredient in building self-assuredness.

Resilience is the ability to stay strong even with all the setbacks and challenges they might face. Encourage your child to persevere through difficult times and to learn from their mistakes.

Foster Positive Self-Talk

As the cliche saying goes: “Mind over matter.” Positive self-talk is an important aspect of building confidence.

The power of positive thinking is truly amazing and the messages we tell ourselves truly matter. It’s not enough for you to be your kid’s personal cheerleader — they also need to hear it from themselves and have an inner cheerleader.

If not, their negative nancy thoughts can drown out the positive things that others say.

Encourage your child to use positive affirmations, not only when they want to succeed with something but even with daily activities. A simple “I am great” or “I am beautiful” or “I will have fun today” after waking up can reframe their whole day.

Normalize Failure and Setbacks

Failure and setbacks are a part of life. Make sure they understand that life is like a wheel — bad times or slumps always come but they never last.

Remember to help your child understand that everyone experiences these and that they are opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of being the end of the road, instill in them that mistakes or failures are just building blocks to their future success.

When setbacks happen, talk with them and encourage them to view mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow — that they are just going through a learning curve — rather than as a reflection of their worth.

Build a Supportive Environment

Building a supportive environment is crucial for cultivating confidence and improving self-esteem. This means having open communication, empathy, understanding, and showing affection.

I know some people (especially old-fashioned ones) say that too much affection and love can make kids turn out spoiled — but don’t listen to them! In fact, affection and support does the opposite: it makes kids more self-assured, more confident, and more ready to take on the world.

Ask your child about their feelings and thoughts and encourage them to answer openly and honestly. Listen to them without judgment and offer support and guidance when needed.

Teach How To Set Realistic Goals

It’s no secret that having more achievable goals helps you succeed more. That’s why businesses are always advised to set realistic goals!

So, make sure to do the same for your kid. Teach your child how to break down their goals into smaller, achievable steps. This way, success is easier to earn and with each small win they get, their confidence can improve little by little.

It also helps them figure out their strengths and weaknesses better — which is also key to finding their passion and learning all about themselves.

Consistency: The Key to Cultivating Confidence

Consistency is key when it comes to cultivating confidence. There’s no one-and-done method to cultivating self-assurance and raising a confident child.

All the tips and advice I’ve given above — becoming a confident role model, encouraging exploration and creativity, celebrating effort, cultivating resilience, fostering positive self-talk, normalizing failure and setbacks, building a supportive environment, teaching how to set realistic goals, and being consistent — really do work, but only if you keep doing them throughout their childhood.
