Top 7 Regrets in Life - How to Overcome Regret

videos Sep 14, 2017

In this video, we cover the top 7 regrets in life. Regret is ugly. It’s toxic. Talk with grandparents or go to a nursing home and ask people in their 70s or 80s what regrets they may have. It’s not pretty.

At least a few of these regrets are bound to hit a nerve with you. If they do, think about what action you can take to avoid them in your life.

Regret #1 – I wish I had not spent so much time working. My mother used to say, “nobody on their deathbed ever says, “I should have spent more time at the office”. Work/life balance is different for everyone. You need to find what works for you. Don’t wait until it’s too late to make the adjustments you desire.

Regret #2 – I wish I had been more loving to the people who matter the most. This could be our spouse, our parents, our children, or even our friends. In the end, it’s the relationships that matter. It’s been proven that relationships are a big part of being happy later in life.

Regret #3 – I wish I had lived my own life rather than how society (or someone else) thought I should live – This covers so many areas. From where you to college or the job you are in maybe because of your parents. Or even someone who is closeted about their sexuality and the fear of how their friends and family may treat them. Being true to yourself is not always easy. But you don’t want to regret that truth.

Regret #4 – I wish I had taken better care of myself – While diet and exercise are a big part of what people think of when you say taking care of yourself, I’m also talking about mindfullness and stress. In my opinion, stress has the most powerful negative effect on people. It’s not necessarily the stress itself, but the attitude toward the stress. Those who can make stress their friend and have a positive attitude about it seem much less effected by it.

Regret #5 – I wish I had taken more risks.  This can be in love, work, play, or many things. Fear holds us back from taking risks. Some of it is simply risky in our heads, while other things are actually physically risky…jumping out of a plane, or swimming with sharks. Or it might be that girl you wished you asked out on a date when you were single but you feared rejection. Or the business you didn’t start because you feared failure. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Regret #6 – I wish I discovered my purpose earlier in life.  I figured out in the last few years that my life’s purpose wasn’t sitting behind a computer and phone for 10 hours a day… which I have been doing for nearly 20 years. When you find your purpose, it’s pretty amazing how that feels. The key is to try an lot of things. Also ask those around you what they think you are really good at. You might be surprised that they can provide you the answer.

Regret #7 – I wish I had helped, inspired, or touched more people. You can help your family, your neighbors, your community, or even the world. It’s amazing how good it feels to help other people. The high that I get from doing these videos and helping dads is like nothing else. Don’t ever hold back from helping others.

So those are our top 7 regrets in life.
